Artificial Intelligence Policy
BioSight recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies may support research and scholarly communication. Their use must maintain transparency, confidentiality, accuracy, accountability, and research integrity. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial staff.
Authors and Authorship
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot take responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, originality, or ethical conduct of a published work. Every listed author must meet the journal’s authorship requirements and remain fully accountable for all submitted content.
Disclosure of AI Use
Authors must clearly disclose any use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in preparing a manuscript. The disclosure should identify the tool, version where available, purpose of use, and the sections or tasks for which it was used.
Routine tools used only for spelling, grammar, reference formatting, or basic language correction generally do not require disclosure, provided they do not generate or substantially alter the intellectual content.
Appropriate Uses
AI tools may be used responsibly for language improvement, data analysis, coding assistance, literature organization, or other research-support activities when their use is lawful, ethically appropriate, accurately reported, and subject to meaningful human oversight.
Authors must independently verify all AI-assisted content, including facts, calculations, quotations, references, statistical outputs, interpretations, and conclusions.
Prohibited Uses
Authors must not use AI tools to:
• Generate fabricated, falsified, manipulated, or misleading data, images, results, citations, or references.
• Conceal plagiarism, duplicate publication, inappropriate image manipulation, or other misconduct.
• Replace the authors’ intellectual contribution, critical judgment, or responsibility.
• Enter confidential, personal, copyrighted, proprietary, or sensitive research information into an AI system without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
• Misrepresent AI-generated material as entirely human-produced where disclosure is required.
AI-Generated Images and Research Data
AI-generated or AI-modified images, figures, audio, video, or research data must be clearly identified and described in the manuscript. Such material must not be used in a way that misrepresents the original observations or research findings. Authors remain responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions and complying with applicable ethical and legal requirements.
Reviewers
Reviewers must treat manuscripts and associated materials as confidential. They must not upload manuscripts, figures, data, supplementary files, or review correspondence to publicly accessible or third-party AI systems when doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, or data protection.
Reviewers remain personally responsible for the accuracy, fairness, originality, and substance of their reports. AI-generated reviews that replace the reviewer’s own critical assessment are not acceptable. Any permitted material use of AI during review should be disclosed to the editor.
Editors and Editorial Staff
Editors and editorial staff must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and must not upload unpublished material to external AI tools without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
AI tools may assist with administrative or screening tasks, but final editorial decisions must be made by qualified human editors. Manuscripts will not be accepted or rejected solely on the output of an automated AI-detection tool.
Accountability and Misconduct
Authors, reviewers, and editors remain responsible for all work performed with AI assistance. Undisclosed, deceptive, unsafe, or unethical use of AI may result in manuscript rejection, correction, retraction, reviewer removal, or other action consistent with BioSight’s Publication Ethics and Research Integrity Policy and relevant Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance.
Policy Updates
Because AI technologies and related standards continue to evolve, BioSight may revise this policy when necessary. The policy applicable at the time of submission or review will govern the relevant manuscript.
